Happy Groundhog Day! Celebrated each year on February 2, this holiday began in 1887 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Legend has it that if a groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, we will have 6 more weeks of winter. However, if the groundhog does not see his shadow, spring will arrive early! While this may be rooted in superstition, many people enjoy the fun tradition of predicting what weather we will have following February 2 each year.
What if the Groundhog sees his shadow?
If the groundhog sees his shadow on February 2, we can expect 6 more weeks of winter! For those of us who enjoy winter and colder weather, this may be a benefit. For those of us who are wishing for spring, this may be less exciting. Assuming there might be 6 more weeks of winter, it’s best to keep your home in preparation for the remaining cold weather. Be sure you have these items handy:
- A snow shovel and ice scraper
- Salt or ice melt
- Your heat on
- Protected pipes
- Winter clothes, coats, gloves, hats, and scarves
What if the Groundhog doesn’t see his shadow?
If the groundhog does not see his shadow on February 2, it could mean the end of snow and ice in the forecast! With spring weather comes warmth and rain. Once warmer weather arrives, you can store away your winter items like snow shovels, snow salt, and winter attire. You may also want to turn off your heat to save on electricity bills and enjoy that in-between weather with no heat or air conditioning on. Additionally, be sure you have:
- Repaired any winter weather damage to your roof, driveway, gutters, or windows
- Prepared for spring cleaning
- Prepared your outdoor items, such as furniture, for spring weather and rain
- Prepared to plant flowers or plants
Whether or not the groundhog sees his shadow can determine the weather! Maybe that’s true and maybe it’s not, but regardless of this fun tradition, it can be beneficial to keep an eye on the upcoming weather to prepare your home and help maintain its best.
